The government of Kenya has postponed the schools opening for second term that had been set for today, 29th April, 2024.

In a letter dated Sunday, 28th April, 2024, the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Education, Dr. Ezekiel Machogu, says that due to the heavy rains pounding the Country, schools opening date has been shifted to Monday, 6th May, 2024.

He says that the devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools is so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water tight measures are put in place to ensure adequate safety for all.

“Based on this assessment, the Ministry of Education has resolved to postpone the reopening of all Primary and Secondary schools by one week,” says Dr. Machogu.

Kenya is currently witnessing unprecedented levels of flooding with at least 42 people feared dead when Old Kijabe Dam burst its banks on Sunday, 28th April, 2024 sweeping away houses in Mai Mahiu.
