BUTALEJA
Residents of Butaleja district led by their LCV Chairperson, Michael Higenyi have told the newly appointed Assistant RDC for the district that they are not willing to stop growing rice in the wetlands.
They told Jimmy Nambiro that vacating wetlands is going to be difficult since it’s the only source of income where they grow rice from.
Nabwiri Angela, one of the local residents told Nambiro that people from Butaleja can now educate their children, feed different people across the country, and boost their household income due to rice growing.
Edward Weere, also a resident from Butaleja asked the new appointed assistant RDC to send their clear message to the President that they are not willing and ready to vacate the wetlands.
Michael Higenyi, the LCV chairperson of Butaleja district supported the rejection saying this will kill his people economically since swamps are the only place where they grow rice.
He urged the government to support the district with Shs1Billion such that they can rehabilitate all roads which were destroyed by recent floods in the district.
Nambiro says that he will present the matter to the President and see how people of Butaleja do farming in the wetlands.
Nambiro says that the President can’t just wake up and chase people who are growing rice in wetlands without alternative solutions urging them to be calm as he talks to the President.
He promised to fight corruption which has escalated in Butaleja district.
