MBALE CITY

Residents in Mbale city at Industrial City Division have today on Friday expressed their discontentment over the poor and abandoned works on Kaguta Road, following the arrest of the responsible officials who were accused of stealing construction materials of the project in March, 2024.

The Road which is named after President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, holds historical significance as one of his escape routes during his time in the bush.

The abandonment of the works according to the disgruntled residents, coupled with the heavy rains has affected the access to schools, businesses and homes by the users.

Kaguta Road in Mbale epitomizes neglect and mismanagement, affecting both residents and institutions. Once promising, it’s now infamous as one of the city’s worst roads, worsened by abandoned construction efforts.

The road’s deterioration hampers access to education and commerce for institutions like IMTAC Institution and Mbale Comprehensive High School.

Kaguta Road’s decline underscores systemic issues and the urgent need for accountability.

As investigations continue, the community demands transparency and rectification. The road’s redemption requires a commitment to the public interest and restoration efforts.

The four officials who were arrested in March for mismanaging construction materials included Denis Mwalye, the road Inspector of Mbale City who is also the Site Engineer and Obondo Yunus a truck driver.

Others included Abdul Karim and Amuza Mafabi both road gangs. They were arrested and detained by Police of Nauyo Police Station.

The four are currently battling a court case and have also been interdicted from their respective offices according to Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Regional police spokesperson.

Speaking to our reporter on phone on Friday, 3rd May, 2024, Mr. Gimui Johnson, the Mbale City Senior Engineer said, “They expect to resume works on the abandoned road over the weekend.”
