Uganda Peoples Defence Forces has released a statement dated today, 6th May, 2024 saying there is a group of conmen extorting up to Shs350,000, via mobile money transfers, from unsuspecting civilians in Bukedi sub-region under the guise of assisting the victims to be recruited into the UPDF as Officer Cadets.
According to Maj Isaac Oware, The UPDF Public Information Officer 3 Division, the conmen are impersonating as senior UPDF and security officers who originate from Bukedi or work in the region.
“Joint intelligence teams are working stealthily to break through these criminal cells, apprehend and prosecute them as per the law,” warns Oware.
He informs the general public that there is no ongoing recruitment into the UPDF and that recruitment into the force is free of charge.
“The UPDF will officially announce through mass media when the time for recruitment comes,” Oware says before adding that the public is urged not to be lured by the conmen and to report any such criminality to security and relevant authorities.
