Government has gazette 10th May, 2024 a public holiday to facilitate the smooth start of the 2024 census.
This has been revealed by Dr. Albert Byamugisha, the Chairman board of directors Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) while addressing the media today, 6th May, 2024.
Byamugisha appeals to Ugandans to stay at home on Friday as it has been gazetted as a public holiday by government.
He says that the night of 9th May, 2024 will be called the Census night and all questions asked will be in reference to that night.
Census will take ten days, effective 10th May.
Among other questions that will be asked are those related to the population i.e number of people in a household by gender and age, location of residence and way of leaving e.g, are you leaving with chicken in the same, what you own, and where you access services like education, schools, water, police, hospitals etc.
The last National Population and Housing Census was carried out in 2014 and it was the fifth conducted in the country since independence.
The collection effort was carried out through face-to-face interviews by enumerators administering a questionnaire to all households within assigned enumeration areas.
The questionnaire covered various demographic and socioeconomic topics, along with questions on housing conditions, and disability. A post-enumeration survey was conducted to ensure data quality.
The total population of Uganda was enumerated at 34,634,650.
