Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) has joined the Uganda Police Traffic to man roads over increased cases of driver indiscipline.

This was confirmed by UPDF Deputy Spokesperson, Col. Deo Akiiki on Monday, 17th June, 2024 saying the UPDF Military Police Traffic Department will bolster the Uganda Police Force’s traffic division.

The purpose of this move is to provide guidance on proper road usage, following complaints to the UPDF leadership about driver indiscipline.

Their mission includes addressing issues of unauthorised individuals donning military attire, such as uniforms and jackets, to intimidate traffic officials while on the roads.

Additionally, they will ensure compliance with military standard operating procedures among UPDF drivers and officers on the road.

“These impromptu checks will focus on the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) area to enhance road safety for all,” says Akiiki.

He warns that vehicles being driven with military jackets hang on them to intimidate Traffic Police officers shall be confiscated.

This has been confirmed by SP Kananura, the Uganda Police Traffic Spokesperson today, 18th June, 2024 saying, joint operations have kicked off to curb the increasing misuse of escort vehicles & illegal sirens characterized by self assumed right of way, violation of one way rule, disrupting traffic control with some escorts usurping the roles of traffic officers, among others.
