Parliament sitting today, 19th June, 2024 and chaired by the Rt. Hon. Speaker, Anita Among Annet has voted against the re-designation of Abed Bwanika and Joyce Bagaala from being Chairperson and Deputy of Government Assurances and Implementation Committee.
The two are all NUP Members of Parliament who have however, fallen out with their Party leadership over the Censure of Hon. Mathias Mpuuga.
The NUP leadership accuses Mpuuga of corruption when he accepted a Service Award of Shs500M when he was still Leader of Opposition and consequently asked him to resign from the Commissioner position he is currently holding.
The Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi had moved a motion before the Floor of Parliament to have Bwanika and Bagaala redesignated saying the two had made the Committee redundant by not holding regular meetings.
However, when the matter was put to vote, the Speaker pronounced that the Nays have it despite spirited objection from the NUP MPs.
Reacting to the vote, Ssenyonyi accused the Speaker of abusing her power saying she is usurping the powers of the Political Parties to nominate committee members.
