A former Sironko District Councilor aspirant has been arrested for defrauding job applicants intending to go to work abroad as Maids.
Abudu Magomba, the former Buteza sub county councilor to Sironko district aspirant was arrested by Mbale City Police over allegations of conning millions of shillings from people with false promises of getting them jobs abroad.
While speaking to our reporter today, Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson said Magombe conned these people last year while working as Bugisu region agent of Potential Recruitment Company.
He adds that Magombe asked people to pay him money of various amounts promising to take them to Arab countries for housemaid work.
Taitika says that the innocent victims got suspicious after waiting for too long and failing to get him either on phone or office at Saima complex building opposite Mbale central market.
The victims reported the matter to Mbale central police which started tracing Magombe until he was finally nabbed on Thursday 20th June, 2024.
Police says that Magombe is currently being detained at Mbale central police station waiting to appear in courts of law to answer charges of obtaining by false pretense.
Azina Gimba, one of the victims from Budaka district, says that in July last year Magomba asked her to pay 1.8 million shillings after promising her that he will process for her documents of going abroad.
She says that after paying the money Magombe changed phone numbers with the aim of dodging her calls and of her colleagues who paid him.
