The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has today released by the results of the National Population Census 2024 in a ceremony presided over by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at Kampala Serena Hotel.

Releasing the results today 27th June, 2024, Dr. Chris N Mukiza, the UBOS Executive Director said out of the total 45,935,046 people counted about 73% fall below the age of 30 years.

50.5% are children aged between 0-17 while 22.7% of the population falls within the youth category (18-30 years old).

This by implication means Uganda is a very young country with the older persons (65 years and above) only taking 5%.

The recent Census shows that current population stands at 45,935,046, compared to 34.6 million in 2014, indicating an increase of 11.3 million over the past decade, inclusive of 780,061 refugees. The net Ugandan population minus refugees is still above 45M.

Out of this 51% of the total population is female with Average household size being 4.4 persons down from 4.7 in the previous census with a growth rate of 2.9% (10.8 million households).

It also shows that 55.6% are of working age (14-64 years), a factor that is very positive for the economic growth of any country that relies on labour for production.
