The Uganda National Students’ Debate, held in Jinja on 3rd September, 2024 under the theme “Amplifying Our Voice for the Attainment of SDGs”, saw Nkoma Secondary School (Nkoma SS) make history by finishing 16th out of 258 schools.
The Mbale city-based school’s debate team, led by patron Madam Patricia Onyango, had a stellar performance, defeating top schools like Hilton High School and Seeta High Green Campus. Although they faced a narrow defeat by Ntare School by just three points, their overall achievement was a testament to their hard work and dedication.
Khapondi Daniel, a Senior Four student, was ranked 12th in public speaking, while Wadada Amos also delivered a strong performance in debate, further solidifying the school’s reputation for excellence in critical thinking and communication.
Madam Onyango praised her team, saying, “We went into this competition to show the so-called big schools that we can outcompete them. Although a few defeated us, we are proud of our achievement and deserved this position.“
This achievement marks a significant milestone for Nkoma SS, showcasing the school’s commitment to academic excellence and critical thinking. Just a few years ago, Nkoma SS was known as an inactive school in such competitions, but their recent performance demonstrates a remarkable turnaround.
With this achievement, Nkoma SS has proven itself as a force to be reckoned with in academic debates, and their students’ dedication and hard work have paid off, making their school notes.
The overall winner was Seeta High Mbarara and Nkoma SS in Eastern did better than other schools.
