Kenya’s President William Ruto has nominated Kithure Kindiki to the post of Deputy President, hours after the Senate voted to impeach Rigathi Gachagua.

Kithure was before today the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration.

Gachagua was impeached by the Senate on Thursday, 17th October, 2024 while he was admitted in Hospital after a short illness.

The announcement was made by the Speaker of the National Assembly to excited members on the morning of today, Friday, 18th October, 2024 in a Special Sitting which observers say was predetermined to vet the next Deputy President.

An advocate of the High Court and the International Criminal Court (ICC), Prof. Kindiki obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) from Moi University and a Diploma in Legal Studies from the Kenya School of Law. Earlier in his career, Prof. Kindiki was a lecturer at the Moi University. He also served as a Senior Lecturer and the Head of the Department of Public Law at the University of Nairobi. He rose to be an Associate Dean at the School of Law in the same institution. He also served as the Secretary of National Cohesion under President Mwai Kibaki.

Prof. Kindiki is the immediate former Senator, Tharaka-Nithi County. He was first elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2017. He was the Senate Majority Leader during the 2013–2017 term and the Deputy Speaker of the Senate from August 2017 to 2020.

Tharaka Nithi County is located in the Central region of Kenya and borders Meru County to the North and North East, Kitui County to the East and South East and Embu County to the South and South West.
