A total of 3,780 gardens of crops have been submerged by floods in Kamutur Sub County in Bukedea District.

On Thursday 17th, Oct 2024 heavy downpour rained and lasted for about 3-4 hours resulting in the destruction of crops, houses and road infrastructure in the sub county.

The crops such as cassava, maize, millet and sorghum all are submerged.

Mr. Jackson Ojekede, Kamutur LCIII chairperson says the most affected parishes are Kamutur, Aeyerere, Tajar, Tukum and Acomai parish. He said all the gardens are water logged.

“We experienced heavy rains on Thursday and all the gardens are water logged including houses,” said Mr. Ojekede.

Mr. Ojekede also added that the floods have cut off most of the roads within the sub county.

“People’s houses are also water logged and most of the roads are cut off, “added by Ojekede. Ojekede therefore appealed for well-wishers intervention

“My people are doing badly and I request for government and well-wishers support”, Ojekede said.

Joseph Okello, one of the farmers, told this publication that all his five gardens of cassava have been submerged by water.

“All the cassava in my five gardens were ready for harvest but all have been submerged by water, my appeal to the government is to let farmers be supported with tapelines for drying some of the crops,” said Okodan.

However, Joseph Justice Okello, the Kamutur sub county speaker said the poor state of the road network has hiked the transportation fee.

“People used to pay boda boda riders from Bukedea to Kamutur a fee of 20,000/- shillings but currently they charge 40,000/- shillings because of the poor road network”, said Okello.

Mary Akol, the Bukedea District Chairperson said most of the sub counties across the district are affected.

These include Kamutur, Aminit, Kangole, Aligoi and Kabarwa Sub County.

She said the delayed completion of the construction of the Acomai irrigation scheme has worsened the situation.
