Phibby Otaala, popularly known in Tororo District as Mama Kuku is coming back to contest for the Tororo District Woman Member of Parliament under the National Resistance Movement Party (NRM).

Phibby is also the NRM Women League National Vice Chairperson, former Ambassador to Nairobi-Kenya and is currently upgrading her Diplomatic knowledge and exposure in a Germany University. She is also Tororo District NRM Vice Chairperson.

In the last general elections, Phibby stood for Budama West Constituency where she beat the incumbent, Markson Oboth Oboth at the NRM Primaries. She however, narrowly lost at the elections where irregularities were cited. Despite this, she did not go to court to contest the outcome but chose the diplomatic route and painfully swallowed the loss.

Recognizing her contribution towards the growth of the NRM Party in Bukedi Sub Region, President Museveni appointed her Ambassador to Nairobi-Kenya, a position she utilized well including bring President William Ruto to Uganda cementing the relationship between the two Principals to-date.

Speaking to this reporter on Phone from Germany on Monday, 18th November, 2024, Phibby revealed that her political aspirations are not over and she is coming back to contest for the Tororo District Woman Member of Parliament Seat come 2026.

“I am an economically viable leader who wishes to see the Bukedi women socially and economically empowered,” she says adding that with the vast diplomatic connections she has made, the knowledge in International Relations, she is now even better placed to represent her people.

Phibby is one of the few leaders in Tororo District who does not see the difference between the Japadhola and Iteso and insists that the two peoples should co-exist meaningfully. This is not surprising considering that she has many projects across the tribal divide and speaks 12 different languages found in Bukedi. She has added German into the litany of the languages she can speak.

Phibby proud to be able to communicate with Chinese Investors in their language says she is now better prepared to serve the interests of her constituents.

The Tororo Seat is currently being occupied by maverick Sarah Opendi and it remains to be seen whether she will want to retain her seat come 2026. If she does, then Tororo District is poised for a marathon political race between these two powerful NRM women politicians.
