TORORO

Phibby Awere Otala, the former Uganda High Commissioner to Kenya, has blamed the current leaders of Bukedi sub-region for doing little about the broken Nagongera road bridge.

Phibby who was speaking to our reporter from Germany on Wednesday 4th December,2024, expressed deep concerns over the delay to repair the Nagongera road bridge describing it as one of the busiest roads in the region that connects to many districts including Butaleja.

Otala says that many leaders in the region are only presenting their personal needs instead of collective interests on facilities like roads and healthcare. She states that as a National Resistance Movement (NRM) Cadre, she couldn’t have allowed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to leave Tororo without visiting the Nagongera road bridge during his recent visit to the district to launch the Standard Guage Railway project (SGR).

“It makes me feel very disappointed with the district administration that Tororo has right now, as a very strong NRM supporter, I couldn’t let him go if I was in Tororo when he came for the SGR project,” Phoebe lamented.

She further urged leaders especially Members of Parliament from the region to consider presenting constructive matters on the floor of Parliament but not matters that add no value to the people of Bukedi.

The Nagongera-Busolwe road has long been a subject of unfulfilled promises. President Yoweri Museveni has previously pledged to upgrade the road, citing its importance to the socio-economic development of the region. However, little progress has been made, leaving residents questioning the government’s commitment.

With the 2026 general elections approaching, the deteriorating state of the bridge and road has also become a source of anxiety for local politicians.
