National Environment Management Authority has committed to getting a home for the famous Jajja Rose Namuddu who was among the 26 persons evicted from Lubigi Wetland in July 2024.
Jajja Rose Namuddu was later to be arrested and remanded to Luzira Prisons after she went back to the wetland and erected a temporary tent since she had nowhere to go.
Efforts to get her released on bail were in many times fruitless as the Presiding Magistrate kept saying she had no permanent place of abode.
However, a spirited fight by human rights campaigners, Atuhaire Agather and Spire Ssentongo, courts saw sense and on 5th December, 2024 released Jajja Namuddu on bail.
Now today, 6th December, 2024, the ED NEMA, Dr. Barirega Akankwasah met with Namuddu’s daughter and has promised to contribute towards her resettlement outside a wetland.
Ms Namuddu though had already got a piece of land secured by the National Unity Platform on which the opposition party had started constructing a small house.
The person they bought the land from asked them to halt construction until they pay the full amount.
“The balance due to the seller is Shs2 million and the balance to finish construction is estimated at about Shs3 million,” Ms Atuhaire shared.
It remains to be seen whether NEMA will join NUP in constructing for Namuddu a house on the piece of land bought by the opposition Party or it will go for a different arrangement altogether.
“This afternoon I met Namuddu’s daughter who explained to me the situation of Jajja Namuddu. I will work with her family to support her efforts to get a home out of wetland. I thank Atuhaire Agather and Spire Ssentongo for championing this cause. We must save wetlands for own own survival,” wrote Dr. Barirega on his X-Handle today Friday, 6th December, 2024.
