As the government prepares to relocate over 5000 people to the Bunambutye government resettlement area, in Bulambuli district, the Ministry of Works and Transport has started constructing road network in the area.
Government procured Bunambutye land in 2019 after landslides hit Nametse in Bududa district leaving over 80 people dead.
That land which measures over 1000 acres was given to people living in disaster prone areas of Bududa, Manafwa, Namisindwa, Sironko and Bulambuli in phases.
Following the landslide which killed over 100 people at Buluganya sub county in Bulambuli district recently, government came up with the idea of giving the remaining land to people who were resettled in IDP camps from Bulambuli.
According to Prime Minister Robina Nambanja part of the 50 billion shillings which was released by government will be used to procure additional land at Bunambutye to resettle the victims.
George Mitiga, the engineer heading road construction work at Bunambutye government resettlement area says the ministry of works and transport working together with Bulambuli district local government will ensure that the place is passable.
He says that after improvement of the road Network will enable people in the area and those they are planning to relocate to access the area well.
He adds that in partnership with Bulambuli district local government, they have each brought graders to speed up the process of opening roads in the area.
Annet Nadundu, the LCV chairperson of Bulambuli says that as a district, they had to join the ministry of works to make the area accessible.
The Prime Minister in a meeting with Bugisu leaders at Mbale district head offices today, 13th December, 2024 said that government is going to relocate the 5000 households anytime the Shs50 billion is availed.
In her speech, she said that some people will be resettled at Bunambutye government resettlement area because the government is planning to buy more land for them.
She says that those who will not want to go to Bunambutye, can be given hard cash to buy land of their choice.
The number of bodies removed from mud still stands at 36.
