BULAMBULI: Water Crisis Hits Landslide Resettlement Victims

BULAMBULI

Over 2,000 people resettled at Bunambutye government resettlement area and those in various IDP camps are struggling to access clean water.

The current dry spell has crippled the solar-powered water system, which was installed by government, leaving most taps dry.

Locals who talked to our reporter on Tuesday, 21st January, 2025 have reported queuing from morning to evening to access the limited water available, with some individuals going without water when the sun sets.

Godfrey Epera, the Bulambuli Chief Administrative Officer, emphasized that providing water to the resettled community is the responsibility of the central government.

Prime Minister, Robinah Nabanja had instructed the Ministry of Water to expedite the process of connecting the Bunambutye resettlement area to the Sipi Gravity Flow Scheme in neighboring Kapchorwa district. However, a month has passed since the directive was issued and no progress has been reported.

This water crisis is not new to the area. In 2020, the Bunambutye Resettlement Camp faced a similar crisis, with residents relying on nearby streams and swamp water for domestic use. The situation highlights the need for sustainable solutions to address the water scarcity issue in the region.
