A councillor representing Agururu A3 parish, Western Division in Tororo Municipality on Tuesday 21st January, 2025 survived being lynched by angry residents on accusations of practicing witchcraft.

Angry residents of Chaminula village in Western Division armed with sticks and stones descended on Stephen Odur and beat him to near death until he was rescued by Tororo Police who took him to their cells for safe custody.

Al Jamal Jayz, the LC3 Chairperson of Western Division said by the time he called the police to rescue Oduri, residents had pounced on him on accusations that he is the one having evil spirits that are sleeping with women in the area of Chaminula.

Jamal has cautioned people in his area of jurisdiction to avoid taking the law into their own hands but rather use area local councils to solve problems that they encounter.

“But what happened was not good, the information I get it’s something related to witchcraft, sometimes people do things that they don’t know but to attempt to take away somebody’s life is not something good,” Jamal said.

He also asked the local leaders of Western Division to always take charge of their areas In case there’s any matter that the community is suspicious about.

When he arrived at the scene, locals said they caught the Councillor with a witch doctor carrying a small cooking pot which they placed in Aturukuku stream in what they believed was witchcraft.

The Councillor was rescued by police amidst chaotic scenes.
