Government has once again extended the Validity period for the National Identification by another year.
In an official statement to Parliament dated Tuesday, 21st January, 2025, the Minister for Internal Affairs, Rtd Major Gen. Kahinda Otafire says the validity period has been extended by yet another year.
Otafire says the extension is to allow NIRA develop new technological advancements to enhance the National Security Information System and improve the security features of the National Identification Cards before the commencement of the mass enrollment and renewal exercise.
“The extension of the validity period by an extra period of one year provides the necessary timeframe to integrate these upgrades into the renewal process,” says Otafire.
The extension has occurred with Ugandans having problems using their National IDs to travel within the East African countries.
The Minister however, says they have engaged the Ministry of East African Affairs and Foreign Affairs to signal to member countries about this provisional time bound measure.
However, according to NIRA, the extension of the validity period for National IDs does not mean they are not rolling out mass enrollment and renewal of National IDs.
“Dear comrades, kindly take note that as @NIRA_Ug, we haven’t extended the Renewal Exercise for a year like it is being reported by the Media. We are in the final stages of starting the exercise,” reads NIRA statement on X.com
