Police in Tororo district is currently holding a man on charges of impersonating a doctor, conducting illegal medical treatments and extorting patients at the Tororo General hospital.
The Tororo Deputy District Commissioner, Albert Amula says the suspect has been identified as Job Obbo, a resident of Merikit Sub-county in Tororo district who was apprehended on Tuesday, 28th January, 2025 at the hospital.
Amula says that Obbo was arrested after a caregiver gave him money to buy a surgical blade for an operation where he demanded 15,000 thousand shillings. He says that the suspect will be prosecuted in courts of law on charges of impersonation.
“Charges against Obbo include impersonation and extorting patients,” Amula said.
Dominic Oketch, an eyewitness who was helping his cousin at the hospital where the arrest was conducted, said that the incident came to light when the impersonator solicited money to purchase a surgical blade for an operation on his sister who was to undergo a cesarean section.
Oketch recounted that on Tuesday morning, the suspect dressed in doctor’s attire came at the hospital near the operating theater, masquerading as new staff and taking advantage of a patient who was to undergo an operation.
Later, the police officers arrived at the hospital and arrested the suspect and detained him.
