The number of people suspected to have contracted Ebola and are now under quarantine at the Mbale City Health Centre has grown to seven.

According to Dan Mwayafu, the Mbale Regional hospital’s acting director, the seven include health workers from Mbale Regional Referral Hospital.

Speaking at the emergency Ebola Task Force meeting today, 3rd February, 2025, Dr. Mwayafu, says the health workers (names withheld) had contact with the Ebola patient who passed away and was buried last Friday.

Mwayafu added that family members of the deceased who had contact with him before his death are also among the quarantined individuals.

All seven contacts are being monitored by health experts at Mbale regional referral hospital the quarantine detention center.

“Their health status will be closely watched until the end of the incubation cycle to determine if they have contracted the virus,” Dr. Mwayafu said.

The acting director emphasized that the quarantine is necessary to prevent the individuals from interacting with the community, which could lead to the spread of the disease.

Moses Mugonyi, the Mbale City Health Officer, urged the public to remain calm, stating that the situation is under control and will be managed effectively as long as people follow the Ministry of Health’s guidelines.

Asumin Nasike, the Mbale Resident District Commissioner, warned the public against relying on unverified information from social media, which can create confusion and spread misinformation.
