The office of the Mbale Resident District Commissioner on Tuesday, 4th February, 2025 launched an investigation into alleged sale of government-donated goats.

Last month, 132 goats worth over 150 million shillings were given to farmers in Bungokho sub-county who had voluntarily vacated Khamoto wetlands as part of a government restoration program.

However, most of these goats have been sold, contrary to the program’s purpose of providing alternative livelihoods for farmers.

Charles Wakube, the Mbale District Environmental Officer, expressed surprise at the sale of the goats, emphasizing that the donation aimed to help farmers transition away from wetland farming.

Naomi Nakawala, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner, revealed that their intelligence has identified farmers who sold the goats and those who purchased them, and both parties will face arrest.

“The government has invested heavily in poverty reduction initiatives, but the sale of donated goats undermines these efforts” Nakawala said.

Muhammad Mafabi, the LCV Chairperson of Mbale District, urged the public to refrain from selling government property intended to support poverty alleviation.
