TORORO
Land ownership wrangle between the Tororo District Woman MP family and Amagoro primary school has hindered the development of infrastructure at the school.
Since 2009, the school has been in Court over 3 acres of land which was donated by 3 families; namely Mr Jadwong Opila, the grandfather of Hon Sarah Opendi Achieng in 1968, Mr Machulus Okote and Mr Mathias Ochwo. They were all brothers however one family has been in court for all this time claiming the ownership of that very Land.
In 14/06/2021, the school won civil suit No 002 of 2014; Tororo municipal council vs Opendi Alex, the Father to Hon Sarah Achieng Opendi, Woman MP Tororo district.
Alex Opendi appealed to the high Court of Tororo against the ruling of the lower Court and won in October 2024. The school management committee and Tororo municipal council appealed against high Court ruling to Court of Appeal in Kampala.
The struggle has affected the school performance and infrastructure development and expansion of the school.
The government should therefore intervene to assist the school management through the Attorney General so that this matter is settled once and for all and the school is allowed to progress for the benefit of the community.
Yesterday on Monday, 24th February, 2025, the National Coordinator (ONC) district coordinator Tororo, Charles Owor monitored Amagoro primary school in Amagoro A cell, Amagoro A Ward, Eastern Division Tororo Municipality.
During the monitoring, Owor asked the government to intervene into this land wrangle such that it can end and the school’s development progresses.
The school has population of 400 pupils; 199 Boys and 201 Girls. In 2024 PLE Results, the school had no first grade but they managed to get second grade D2 9 pupils, D3 13, Div 4, 4 and 5 in U out of 31 Candidates that sat PLE 2024.
The school has nine (9) Teachers 5 male and 4 female Teachers.
However the school Headteacher, Alfred Imujaro attributes the poor performance partly due to the unending land wrangle between the school and the family of the former Minister Hon. Sarah Achieng Opendi who is the current woman MP for Tororo District.
Andrew Ojoko and Peter Odeke all parents of Amagoro P/S say that these wrangles have put their children at risk in terms of security.
They says unless government comes in to intervene, they are ready to take their children to other schools which can lead to the collapse of the school.
