KATAKWI

The beneficiaries of Paris Development Modal (PDM) in the villages of Akoboi Sub County, Katakwi district are weeping tears after Wolves invaded their homes and killed 55 sheep and goats in different homesteads.

The dog-like animals combed villages of Alukucok, Ogongora, Asutuni in Alukuck parish killing animals, suck their blood and leave flesh.

According to a report from the Deputy Resident District Commissioner Katakwi, the wolves have killed 55 Parish Development Modal sheep from beneficiaries over a two-week period.

Additionally, the deputy RDC, reported that in November 2023 wolves also killed 59 sheep and goats in Abela parish, jeopardizing the PDM’s success which is meant to transform the lives of people and sustain development.

Okwi stressed that the wolves pose a threat to the people’s economy and development. He says the wolves are bringing a threat to people’s economy but more so to the program in the district.

According to Okwi, the district has received 5 billion shillings, and the disbursement process is nearing completion. However, the RDC is worried that while 109 parishes in the area benefit from PDM, 22 recognized parishes are missing it.

However, compensation for sheep owners awaited the district’s participation with Uganda Wildlife. Okwi appealed to the government to compensate those in Abela, Getom, Alukucuk and Akoboi whose animals bought using PDM money.

Betty Akiteng of Abela recently wondered how she will repay her PDM loan.

Dr. Anthony Odeke, the Acting District Veterinary Officer, said they submitted a report to Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) in response to wolves that killed sheep and goats in Abela parish.

Raphael Magyezi, the Minister of Local Government during the commissioning of Local Economics Growths Support projects Legs in Katakwi said he will remind the ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities to agree to the compensation of the owners of animals.

Katakwi District is a district near the Kidepo and Pian-Upe game reserves hence the human wildlife conflict records related cases.
