A 28 year old Peke Sect member has chopped off fingers of a mosquito spray operator attached to Butaleja town council Site, today Friday afternoon, 14th March, 2025
Hassan Mwima who was resisting the mosquito spraying actually aimed at the head of Charles Mosso who instinctively raised his hands to protect the head.
This ugly incident happened at Hisega Cell, Butaleja Town Council
Butaleja district last week commenced the exercise of door to door mosquito spray exercise which will take two weeks as a way of reducing malaria spread.
Mosso narrates that he went to Mwima’s home to spray against mosquitoes, in the ongoing Residual spray (IRS) exercise. Mwima, declined to open his house for the spray, claiming his religion known as (Peke) doesn’t allow him to accept any government program like mosquito spraying, immunization, PDM among others.
Mosso insisted on convincing Mwima, angering the latter even more.
Mwima, allegedly picked a panga, targeting Mosso’s head. Mosso, guarded his head by the hands and Mwima cut the sprayer’s fingers in the scuffle.
Milton Mwima, the Butaleja town council Site supervisor, says that they have so far received 2 cases of resistance in the IRS ongoing spraying exercise at Hisega cell, and Nahigombe cell.
He further said that the resisters claimed that the Actellic chemicals used in spraying breed bedbugs, others claim that chemicals cause infertility in men, others claim chemicals cause Cancer, while others say their religion does not allow.
He says that after injuring Mosso, he called forth the police for action and they managed to arrest Hassan Mwima, for assault and attempted murder.
Charles Mosso, is currently undergoing treatment in Butaleja Health centre III.
Michael Hiire, the in charge of Butaleja health centre III, confirmed that Charles Mosso is undergoing treatment for the injury he sustained in the fight. According to Hiire, Mosso’s fingers were cut.
Butaleja’s District Police Commander, Jane Ayesiga, confirmed the incident saying the suspect is in their custody.
She cautioned the public against fighting this ongoing government program saying those chemicals have no harm.
Joseph Were, the Peke Sect leader when contacted on phone backed Mwima saying police must respect freedom of worship of their religion.
