Dr. Gertrude Kampi, a medical practitioner at Bududa Hospital, has been arrested and detained at Bududa Central Police Station for allegedly taking a bribe of Shs100,000 from a patient before giving them drugs.

According to Patrick Nabutanyo Kibeti, the Bududa District Acting Information Officer, Dr. Kampi was arrested last night on Sunday, 16th March, 2025 at the Hospital premises.

The incident unfolded when Andrew Nakhaboya brought his wife to the hospital for medical attention after suffering miscarriage complications.

Dr. Kampi allegedly requested for Shs100,000 before giving medicine and other items like gloves before attending to the patient yet those items are free since they are labeled Government of Uganda, Not for Sale.

Nakhaboya paid the money, but security was notified, leading to Dr. Kampi’s arrest.

Elijah Madoyi, the Bududa Resident District Commissioner, condemned the incident, emphasizing the need to fight corruption in government health facilities.

He says all medical workers and other scientists have had their salaries increased but he wonders why corruption is still at health facilities.

Madoi adds that Dr. Kampi has been having the habit of asking money from patients before offering them drugs in the facility yet government drugs are for free.

The Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, Rogers Taitika, stated that he has not yet received all the details to provide to the media.
