The East African nation, Rwanda has today, Monday, 17th March, 2025 severed diplomatic relations with Belgium.

In a letter dated Monday, 17th March, written by Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the decision which takes immediate effect is premised on the fact that Belgium has taken sides in the current regional crisis pitying Rwanda/M23 and DRC/Allies on the other hand.
“Belgium has clearly taken sides in a regional conflict and continues to systematically mobilize against Rwanda in different forums,…..in an attempt to destabilize Rwanda and the region,” reads the statement in part.
Rwanda also accuses Belgium of allowing groups that propagate genocidal denial and sustain genocidal ideology to use her territory.
Consequently, Rwanda has given all Belgian Diplomats 48 hours to leave the country. However, in “Compliance with the Vienna Convention, Rwanda will assure of protection of the premises, property and archives of the Belgian diplomatic mission in Kigali.”
