BUTALEJA
A case of murder by mob action is being investigated by the Territorial Police in Butaleja, following the killing of Mwima Richard, alias Kajubi, a notorious motorcycle thief.
The incident occurred on March 18, 2025, at around 8:00 am in Jabusiba Village, Nakwasi Parish, Butaleja Sub-County, Butaleja District.
According to Moses Mugwe, the Bukedi South region police spokesperson, Mwima stole a motorcycle registration number UFU 799H, a red Bajaj Boxer, from Odoi David in Tororo District.
He says after discovering the theft, Odoi reported the matter to CPS Tororo and informed Keplimo Levie, a recovery officer with Watu Motorcycle Company. Levie tracked the stolen motorcycle and found Mwima Richard riding it towards Leresi Village in Butaleja District.
The residents of Leresi Village, led by the chairperson of the Leresi boda boda stage, arrested Mwima and recovered the stolen motorcycle. However, shortly after, Mwima was killed by the mob.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Mwima was a notorious suspect linked to aggravated robberies of motorcycles and murder cases in the region. He had been elusive to arrests and was being sought for prosecution purposes.
Mugwe says that police have condemned the mob justice, emphasizing the importance of reporting and handing over suspects to lawful authorities for legal action.
The scene of the crime was visited by the District CID Officer, Scene of Crime Officer, and other staff. The body was taken to Mbale City mortuary for a postmortem examination. Inquiries are ongoing, but no arrests have been made yet.
