The Ministry of Works and Transport has secured nine new Search and Rescue boats.
According to a statement posted on the Ministry’s X-Handle on Wednesday, 19th March, 2025, the 9 boats will be deployed on Lakes Victoria, Albert and Kyoga at the 9 Search and Rescue Centers across Uganda’s inland water bodies.
This development is part of the Multinational Lake Victoria Maritime Communications & Transport Project purposed to ensure safer fishing activities, fewer maritime accidents, reducing loss of lives and improve security and transport.
It is a big step toward poverty reduction and a safer, more secure maritime sector
The Ugandan government is actively working to enhance water safety by establishing nine Search and Rescue (SAR) centers across major lakes, including Lake Victoria, Lake Albert, and Lake Kyoga, with the initiative to respond to alarming drowning statistics.
So far, UGX 17 billion (approximately USD 4.8 million) has been allocated for various maritime safety projects, including the construction of a Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Entebbe.
