SOROTI CITY
Soroti City has approved a budget of 27 billion UGX for the 2025-2026 financial year aiming to enhance service delivery.
The education department has been allocated 14 billion, which will fund key initiatives such as the rehabilitation of two classroom blocks at Hilders Primary School, the construction of a five-stance pit latrine at Onyakai Primary School, the construction of a three-classroom block and a five-stances pit latrine at Soroti Demonstration Primary School, Supply of desks to Otatai and Moruapesur Primary Schools.
The budget was presented by Hellen Amongin, Secretary of Finance, Planning Administration and Investment Soroti City Council on Friday, 21st March, 2025.
The second department, the Works Department, was allocated 2 billion to prioritize areas like: Maintenance of street lighting, road opening and maintenance and completion of the drainage system.
Health Sector 2.9 billion: Completion of Moruapesur Health Centre III and purchase of furniture for the Health Department office.
The City plans to raise 3 billion UGX from local revenue, receive 24 billion UGX from the central government and secure 14 million UGX in external financing.
“I want to appreciate the Technical officers for the timely availing of resources which has led to the quick budget approval”, Amongin said.
Speaker Juliet Agonyo expressed confidence that the budget will improve service delivery in various sectors citing a 75% completion rate of projects from 2023-2025.
“We have achieved significant progress in implementing our projects and we are committed to completing the remaining tasks” Agonyo said.
Mayor Joshua Edogu praised the Speaker for her guidance to a peaceful council session and urged technical officers to mobilize funds for project implementation.
He also emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the use of public funds and retaliated commitment to improved service delivery.
Mayor Edogu tasked especially the Technical officers to always attend Council business.
The approved budget is slightly higher than the previous year’s budget of 25 billion UGX.
The city council is optimistic that the increased funding will translate into improved services for the residents of Soroti City.
