NEMA has conducted inspections over effluent discharge into Lake Victoria from the nearby facilities in Kigo, and Busabala causing water pollution and posing health risks to the nearby communities and water habitats.
The inspection carried out by a team of NEMA Environmental Inspectors was carried out on Friday, 21st March, 2025 following numerous complaints of the water being polluted.
Effluent discharge into the lake contaminates the water, depletes oxygen levels, and encourages the growth of harmful algae blooms, which can lead to dead zones where marine life cannot survive.
Following the inspection, NEMA will take action against violators, including issuing penalties, requiring stricter waste management practices, and promoting the use of environmentally friendly technologies.
Section 43 of the National Environment Act, Cap 181 and Regulation 4 of National Environment (Effluent Discharge Standards into Water and Land) Regulations, 2020 prohibits discharge of effluent into water bodies unless the discharge meets the prescribed effluent quality standards.
