His Royal Highness Won Ateker Raphael Otaya has expressed profound reflections on his experiences and the vital call for peace and unity among the Kumam people and beyond. This follows his return from the All-Africa Human Rights Conference held in Johannesburg, South Africa from 18th March 2025 to 20th March 2025.

His Highness represented Uganda and the Kumam Chiefdom at this esteemed conference, which convened under the theme “Education for Peace.” The event, part of the 18th Youth for Human Rights World Education Tour, brought forth dynamic engagements focusing on human rights and sustainable peacebuilding initiatives.

During his discourse, His Royal Highness reflected on the teachings of “loving thy neighbor as thyself,” emphasizing the importance of respect for diverse cultures as a cornerstone for peaceful coexistence.

“We are tasked with upholding the right to life in accordance with Ugandan laws and international standards, ensuring we do not infringe upon the rights and freedoms of others. It is imperative that we advocate for peaceful coexistence and share resources with our neighbors, wrapped in love and understanding,” said His Royal Highness Otaya.

The conference allowed His Highness to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Kumam people to leaders from the African Union and the United Nations. His Royal Highness expressed his belief that these engagements will lay a solid foundation for bilateral ties, which are essential for the growth and development of the Kumam region.

“This opportunity to interact with leaders on such an international platform showcases the Kumam to the outside world. Together, we shall work towards defeating poverty through hard work and unity,” he emphasized.

Upon his return, His Royal Highness raised a strong call to the people of Kumam, urging them to redirect their efforts from extravagant expenditures to a developmental agenda. He noted his observations during his time in South Africa, stating:

“I returned from South Africa without witnessing any form of commuting, everyone is driving or riding a big motorcycle. I challenge all Kumams to refocus our energies on enhancing our livelihoods through cooperation and development rather than spending on transient pleasures like drinking alcohol.”

His Royal Highness reiterated the absolute necessity of peace within the Kumam lands, as well as with neighboring communities, translating the ideals of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights into actionable principles.

“We must treat each other with love and dignity, embracing the principle that we are all equal regardless of tribe, color, or race. Let us promote peaceful coexistence, for without peace, our endeavors are rendered meaningless.”

His Royal Highness underscored the critical nature of promoting gender equality and intercultural understanding, calling for a community-wide commitment to these values:

“Let discrimination and violence have no place among us. Peace must prevail throughout our community, ensuring that every individual feels valued and respected,” he stated with resolute sincerity.

In closing, His Royal Highness Won Ateker Raphael Otaya urged all Kumams, and indeed all citizens, to uphold the ideals of peace, love, and shared dignity, ensuring these principles resonate in every aspect of life.
