Police in Jinja City are searching for ten suspects who escaped from custody, while one has been rearrested during a coordinated law enforcement operation. Meanwhile, 12 police officers have been charged and detained in connection with the incident.
According to the Kiira Regional Police Command, led by Charles Nsaba, a full-scale investigation has commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape. The ten suspects had been charged with minor offenses, including affray and public nuisance.
Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson, SP James Mubi stated that out of the ten escapees, one was rearrested during an immediate law enforcement operation conducted after the escape in the early hours of Sunday, March 30th.
He added that security protocols at Jinja Central Police Station are under serious review to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The recaptured suspect, along with those still at large, will face an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody.
RPC Charles Nsaba emphasized that protecting public safety is a priority and warned that anyone found culpable of sabotaging the criminal justice system will be held accountable without fear or favor. He also cautioned officers against neglecting their duties, stressing that “command, control, and administration must be taken seriously at all police facilities.”
