Nabumali High School has called on surrounding schools in the Bugisu sub-region to utilize its swimming pool to train students interested in competitive swimming.

The school’s headteacher, Margaret Nabude, made the appeal after Nabumali High School emerged seventh in the National Schools Swimming Gala held at the school on Saturday, 5th April, 2025.

The gala, organized by the Uganda Swimming Federation (USF), attracted 14 schools, with only one participant from the Eastern region. Ms. Nabude expressed concern about the low representation from the region.

“I’m worried about the lack of participation from other schools in the region,” she said. “Some schools, like Teso College and Bukedea Comprehensive, have swimming pools but didn’t participate. I urge our neighboring schools to utilize Nabumali High School’s swimming pool to train their students.”

Ms. Nabude praised her students’ performance, noting that they had improved significantly since the last gala, where they ranked 14th.

Moses Mwase, president of the Uganda Swimming Federation, commended Nabumali High School for its improved facilities, which enabled electronic tallying. He encouraged schools to utilize the pool, citing its standard and size – the second-largest in Uganda.

Max Kanyerezi Akiiki, general secretary of the USF, announced that the best swimmers would join the national team to represent Uganda in upcoming competitions.

Nabumali High School swimmer, Mukhwana Vicky attributed their improved performance to hard work and dedication, despite being relatively new to competitive swimming.

The 2025 National Schools Swimming Gala was won by Seroma Christian School, followed by Green Hill Academy and BSK Rafters. Nabumali High School ranked seventh with 585 points.

Katana Hanisha, a national team swimmer from Seroma Christian High School, attributed their success to routine training and called for improved facilities in Uganda.

The next national schools swimming gala is scheduled to take place at Bukedea Comprehensive College.
