In a significant political development, Owek. Veronica Vennah Kagona, the State Minister for Youth and ICT in the Busoga Kingdom, has officially stepped down from her ministerial role to contest for the Kamuli District Woman Member of Parliament seat in the upcoming elections.

Kagona submitted her request for official leave in a letter addressed to Owek. Joseph Muvawala, the Kingdom’s Prime Minister (Katuukiro), citing her intention to focus on national elective leadership. Her resignation takes effect from April 8, 2025.

In her letter, Kagona expressed profound gratitude to His Majesty the Kyabazinga and the Busoga Kingdom leadership for the trust placed in her since her appointment in 2016.

“It has been a great honor and humbling experience to contribute to the advancement of my Kingdom, especially in matters concerning Basoga youth,” she wrote.

She emphasized that her decision followed “reflective consultations” and stems from her desire to serve the people of Bugabula at the national level. Kagona confirmed her candidacy for the Kamuli District Woman MP seat and pledged to uphold the values of the Kingdom throughout her political journey.

“I do this with deep respect for the Kingdom’s structures and seek your blessing and guidance as I embark on this new journey of service,” she stated.

Her announcement comes just days after the incumbent Kamuli Woman MP, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, accused the Busoga Kingdom of political sabotage, claiming it was backing one of its ministers to challenge her. Kagona’s resignation and entry into the race are expected to intensify the political dynamics in Kamuli, a region long seen as a Kadaga stronghold.

Despite the rising political temperatures, Kagona struck a tone of unity and commitment.

“I remain committed to the vision and values of Obwa Kyabazinga and pledge to keep the banner raised,” she affirmed.

She also assured her support for a smooth transition and expressed willingness to serve the Kingdom in any future capacity.

Kagona’s move marks a bold step by a new generation of Busoga leaders transitioning to the national stage. All eyes are now on Kamuli as the race between Kagona and Kadaga shapes up to be one of the most closely watched contests in the region.
