Manafwa police are investigating circumstances surrounding a violent incident in which suspected smugglers set fire to a Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) car and a 30-year-old man allegedly killed by a stray bullet.

The incident occurred on May 8, 2025, at around 10:00 am in Buwasibi cell, in Butiru Town Council, Manafwa district.

According to Rogers Taitika the Elgon region police spokesperson, URA officials intercepted a smuggler, prompting other suspected smugglers to violently attack the officials, assault them, and set their car (UA902AQ Vitz, white in color) on fire.

He says Army officers responded to the scene and attempted to disperse the crowd, firing shots into the air. Unfortunately, a stray bullet hit Brain Mukoni, a 30-year-old resident of Butingu village, who later succumbed to his injuries.

He adds that the two URA officials and two other victims were rushed to the nearby hospital for treatment.

Mukoni’s body was taken to Mbale City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination. The police are conducting ongoing investigations into the incident.
