A 5-year-old girl, Nakawuki Regina Gift, died in a suspected drowning incident at Ttula zone, Nabweru division, Wakiso district, on July 28, 2025.
SSP Patrick Onyango, the police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan area says, Nakawuki was playing on the verandah when it started raining heavily. Her mother, Bwambale Justine, left her and her siblings inside the house to harvest rainwater.
While playing, Nakawuki slipped on the slippery verandah and fell into a nearby water trench. Despite efforts by her mother to rescue her, she was swept away by the fast-moving water and carried to a larger trench.
He says that police and villagers searched for Nakawuki’s body but were unsuccessful on Monday and the search resumed today the 29th July 2025, and her body was eventually found in the trench. The body was retrieved and taken to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem.
SSP Onyango has called for parental supervision, especially during the rainy season and near water channels. He advised parents to be vigilant and ensure their children do not play near water channels to prevent such tragedies.
