A devastating accident occurred on July 29, 2025, at approximately 6:40 AM, near Amungura Bridge along the Busia-Tororo Road.

A Toyota Hiace vehicle, registration number UA 889AM, traveling from Kampala to Tororo, lost control after hitting a pedestrian, Okedi Raymond, a 75-year-old resident of Amungura Village. The vehicle then veered off the road and plunged into the Malaba River, resulting in four fatalities and 13 serious injuries.

According to Moses Mugwe, the Bukedi South region police spokesperson, the deceased are Okedi Raymond, 75, a pedestrian from Amungura Village and other four passengers who died on the spot, yet to be identified.

He says the injured 13 passengers have been rushed to Tororo General Hospital for medical attention.

Mugawe says the driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, was reportedly traveling at high speed when the accident occurred. After receiving information about a temporary blockage on the Tororo route, the driver opted to use the Busia-Tororo Road. Unfortunately, the vehicle lost control after hitting the pedestrian, leading to the fatal accident.

The towed vehicle has been taken to Busia Central Police Station for inspection as investigations are currently underway, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

The police wish to extend their condolences to the bereaved families and grant them the strength to cope with the loss. They also wish a speedy recovery to those injured in the accident.

Mugwe urges all road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such accidents. Failure to comply will result in the law taking its course.
