MBALE CITY

The Eastern and Southern Africa Small-Scale Farmers Forum (ESAFF Uganda) is hosting a week-long national youth training in Mbale.

The workshop is equipping young leaders from 18 districts across Uganda with critical skills in agroecology, communication, and political economy to help them tackle the challenges of climate change.

The training has attracted 18 youth representatives from the Bugisu, Busoga, and Teso regions. They are learning a range of sustainable agriculture practices such as Organic pesticides and fertilizers, Crop rotation, Mulching, Agroforestry etc

David Oming, a programs representative for ESAF Uganda, emphasizes the importance of this grassroots approach. “Why we are doing this is that, as ESAF Uganda, we believe in having a strong grassroots movement,” Oming said. “So, we want to build a movement of youth who are in a position to do grassroots advocacy from grassroots to national levels.”

By training these youth leaders, ESAF Uganda aims to create a ripple effect, enabling them to return to their communities and train others. This will build a network of informed and empowered young farmers capable of communicating the issues they face and advocating for their needs within the broader political and economic landscape.

ESAF Uganda, the country’s largest small-scale farmers’ movement, operates in 15 districts and is committed to building a resilient and sustainable future for Uganda’s farming communities.
