Traders plying business in different shopping city centers in Kampala have today August 19, 2025 gone on a peaceful strike demanding government to slash on the exorbitant taxes they pay to Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
Most shops on Chain of Liberty center, Mukawano arcade, Hams shopping center and City shopping mall among others remained closed since morning.
The disappointed traders say the cost of doing business in Kampala has become too expensive yet the sales are down.
Apparently there is heavy presence of security personnel on all the streets leading to shopping centers within the middle of Kampala City. Armed police officers and soldiers are seen patrolling the town. No armed security personnel has yet fired a bullet because the demonstrators are not violent at all.
However, the strike comes as a big blessing to Street vendors as they are busy selling their items without any interferences from Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Law enforcement officers.
Elsewhere, traders in Entebbe Municipality have joined their fellow traders in Kampala to protest over what they describe as heavy taxation.
