At least 9000 women, including 240 refugees, have benefited from entrepreneurship training programs under the Generating Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women Enterprises (GROW) Project.
The Ugandan government launched an ambitious entrepreneurship training program to empower at least 20,000 women with essential business skills, marking a significant step toward boosting female economic participation across the country Under GROW Project spearheaded by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD).
The training that commenced on the 9th -18th of August 2025 aims at equipping women entrepreneurs with practical knowledge to establish, grow, and sustain successful businesses.
After the eleven days training at Nakawa, Makerere University Business School (MUBS), John Ssengendo, the Project Coordinator of Grow at MGLSD said that the training program focused on imparting entrepreneurship skills, emphasizing how to initiate and sustain a business, as well as how to access and effectively utilize the Grow fund.
Ssengendo adds that they have plans to traverse the whole country such that all intended women are reached as per GROW’s commitment to promoting women’s economic empowerment and reducing poverty, by providing women with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in business.
“The inclusion of 240 refugees in the training program is particularly noteworthy, as it demonstrates Grow’s dedication to supporting vulnerable populations and empowering them with entrepreneurship skills, to promote their self-reliance and resilience, enabling them to rebuild their lives and contribute to their host communities.” Emphasized Ssengendo.
Meanwhile, Dr. Diana Nandagire, the Director of Entrepreneurship, innovation and Incubation Center at Makerere University Business School and senior lecturer who are spearheading the training of women has applauded government for giving opportunity to women as well as refugees to improve their lives, adding that as MUBS they are ready to give training to everyone.
