MBALE CITY
Another opposition political party has emerged in Mbale, but it has surprisingly decided to back President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for the 2026 general election.
The Republican Women and Youth Party (RWYP), which was founded in 2004 and registered as the 5th political party in Uganda, has re-emerged after two decades of silence.
Paulo Butita, the general Secretary of RWYP, told this reporter in an interview on Tuesday, 19th August, 2025 that the party will support President Museveni in the 2026 general election while maintaining its independence from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Butita revealed key party members as Stella Nambuya, a founding member, Amos Wakateka, Caleb Wakhungu, and Martin Wetete, the legal counsel.
Butita emphasized that the party is ready to take leadership positions in various political offices, except for the presidency, which they have decided to reserve for President Museveni.
He clarified that backing Museveni does not mean the party is dissolving or merging with NRM.
Julius Muchunguzi, the spokesperson for the Uganda Electoral Commission, confirmed the party’s registration, stating that it was duly registered.
