The Government of Uganda has today, Thursday, 21st August, 2025 confirmed the conclusion of an agreement with the United States of America as part of ongoing bilateral cooperation on migration management.
The Media has been awash with news that the Ugandan government had concluded arrangements with the U.S to receive deported non-U.S Citizens.
According to Mr. Bagiire Vincent Waiswa, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agreement relates to third-country nationals who may not be granted asylum in the United States but are unable or unwilling to return to their countries of origin.
He explained that the arrangement is temporary and subject to specific conditions. Individuals with criminal records, as well as unaccompanied minors, will not be accepted under this framework. He further noted that Uganda has indicated preference for the individuals transferred under this agreement to be from African countries.
The two governments are currently working out the detailed modalities for implementation of the arrangement.
