Police in Nsangi on Sunday the 24th of August 2025 apprehended 16 individuals including a driver and five passengers of Vehicle Reg. No. UBH 183S Toyota Hiace which was traveling for a football match in Buwama Mpigi district.
The vehicle was found dangerously loaded with 31 passengers, 13 riding on top, 18 seated inside and had its number plates deliberately obscured.
According to SP Michael Kananura, the traffic police spokesperson, the passengers have been charged with riding in a dangerous position, while the driver faces multiple charges including concealing a number plate, driving out of class and breach of operator’s license.
SP Kananura said the group was intercepted through cameras as part of traffic police’s efforts to monitor and curb dangerous behavior on roads.
However following their arrest, the rest stormed police demanding their immediate release prompting police to swiftly swing into action leading to the arrest of three other suspects for obstruction and inciting violence.
“We strongly condemn this kind of reckless and unlawful behavior because such actions not only violate traffic regulations but also endanger lives.” Said SP Kananura.
SP Kananura calls upon the public to adhere to traffic rules and regulations and refrain from actions that compromise road safety.
