Arua City Engineer, Charles Omona has been arrested on allegations of abuse of office and mismanagement of UGX 1 billion allocated for the Road Fund.
The arrest followed a meeting of the Arua City Road Fund Committee, chaired by Geoffrey Feta, the Ayivu East Member of Parliament, on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. During the meeting, committee members scrutinized the utilization of the UGX 1 billion remitted to the city in the 2024-2025 financial year.
The investigation revealed that Omona had irregularly spent over UGX 400 million on hiring a grader from Obongi District Local Government, while the remaining UGX 500 million remained unaccounted for. Furthermore, it was discovered that the engineering department had paid UGX 1.6 million daily for six hours of work the grader did each day.
Following these findings, the committee decided to hand Omona over to the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CIID), leading to his arrest and detention at Arua Central Police Station on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. Omona is currently facing charges of abuse of office and mismanagement of government funds as investigations continue. He is now out on police bond.
