Minister Jim Muhwezi’s arch-rival for Rujumbura County MP Seat has stepped down in the Minister’s favor vowing to support him as the County’s NRM Flagbearer.
In a meeting held at the NRM National Vice Chairman office, Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo today, Tuesday, 9th September, 2025, Arinaitwe Frank Rukanirwa pledged his full support for the Security Minister, ahead of the 2026 general elections.
“I’d like to thank Mr. Arinaitwe Frank Rukanirwa for supporting me, the party, and our chairman in the upcoming general election after competing in the NRM Primaries in Rujumbura. This is a win for the NRM and a strong affirmation of the party’s core ideology- Unity,” said Muhwezi shortly after the announcement.
Rukanirwa had vowed to contest as an Independent candidate following the Party Primaries elections for Flagbearer which he lost to Muhwezi.
In the primaries, Muhwezi polled 21,613 votes against Rukanirwa’s 17,083 votes which the latter contested saying the electoral process was marred with malpractices including voter bribery, voter intimidation, disregard for electoral laws and tampering with both the voters registers and results.
His decision to contest as an Independent had attracted a lot of support from constituents who feel they have given the Minister enough chances and that it’s time for change.
