Parliament on 10th September 2025 approved a loan worth 20 million dollars to be borrowed from the Arab Bank to finance the rehabilitation, expansion, and equipment of Bugiri General Hospital.
The hospital will serve close to 600,000 people from Namayingo, Bugweri, Mayuge, Iganga, Namutumba and parts of Busia and Tororo.
The National Economy Committee report presented to parliament by the committee chairperson, John Bosco Ikojo shows that the money will focus on expanding and upgrading the hospital’s medical hospital coverage, including improving jobs and adequate hospital infrastructure.
The loan will assist in the overhauling and refurbishing of all the existing old buildings, like female ward, staff houses, pediatric ward, theatre and mortuary wards renovation.
The Member of Parliament for Bugiri Municipality, Asuman Basalirwa has welcomed the hospital rehabilitation, saying that it will help to provide improved health services to people and improve staff and patient living conditions in the hospital.
“I want to thank the speaker of parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among and my fellow legislators for standing with me especially after the European countries cut Ugandan aid with the passing of the Anti-Homosexuality Act. It was my Idea that we embrace borrowing from the Arab Bank because in Islamic Banking no interest is required and the hospital will ease health services especially that it’s located along Jinja-Tororo highway.” Said Basalirwa.
