TORORO
The Tororo District Council has on 26 September, 2025 officially designated the newly established third district as Nagongera District.
This pivotal decision, reached during a contentious council session, has effectively concluded a prolonged and fervent debate, bringing both relief and anticipation to the district.
With a narrow victory, 30 councillors cast their votes in favor of the name Nagongera, triumphing over the 25 who supported the alternative, Kisoko.
The resolution, which emerged from a day filled with passionate discussions and differing viewpoints, signals a significant shift in the administrative landscape of Tororo.
Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Albert Amula, confirmed the outcome, expressing optimism about the implications for service delivery and governance.
“As a leader in Tororo, I believe these new districts will enhance service delivery and alleviate the political and tribal tensions that have historically marked our district.” Amula said.
The creation of Nagongera District, along with Mulanda District and Mukuju District, is part of a broader restructuring initiative endorsed by President Yoweri Museveni in April 2025.
This transformation also elevated Tororo Municipality to city status, a change that leaders across the board have welcomed as a vital step towards improved governance and equitable distribution of services.
Following the council’s decision, the region is set to undergo a meticulous process of operationalizing the new districts.
This involves the establishment of administrative offices and systems to ensure a seamless transition that can support the community’s needs effectively.
The rivalry between proponents of Nagongera and Kisoko highlighted deeper socio-political dynamics within the district.
However, with the council’s resolution now settled, stakeholders are hopeful that this decision will foster unity and cooperation among the diverse communities of Tororo.
