Police in Jinja district has embarked on investigations into the tragedy that befell residents of Namavundu village, Butagaya Sub County in Jinja district on Wednesday 15th October 2025 after a P.5 pupil identified as Collins Byaguba 15 died instantly after a fight with his classmate.
Authorities say the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding between the two pupils, though the exact cause was not readily established.
Kiira Police spokesperson, SP James Mubi said that the sad reality is that the tragic incident occurred as the other classmates watched without any intervention of preventing the incident for instance prompt reporting of the matter to school authority or separating the duo.
SP Mubi urges all schools and institutions of higher learning to strengthen counselling and guidance during and after lessons or lectures and build and encourage strong, safe and confidential reporting system to report such incidents.
He castigated the teachers that leave children especially in primary schools unattended to.
“The class teacher conducting a lesson should make sure he or she appoints a pupil to do caretaking role of monitoring learners or leave clear instructions to the class representative to ensure safety and security of learners. “Said SP Mubi.
Deputy Jinja Resident District Commissioner, Hassan Kasibante cautioned teachers against negligence of their responsibilities at school and spend much time on TiK-Tok.
“You find teachers have left classes and are under trees wasting all the time on Tik-Tok which is unacceptable and negligence on duty is a criminal offence.” Said Kasibante.
By the time of filing this story the juvenile offender aged 14 years (names withheld) was in police custody as prosecution guided investigations continue and burial arrangements were underway.
