JUST IN: Ugandan Workers MP Arrested For Alleged Fraud Involving USD220,000

Workers’ MP Abdulhu Byakatonda has been charged with fraud and obtaining money by false pretence related to a $220,000 fraud involving property sales.

 

According to the charge sheet, Byakatonda on 31st July 2019 claiming to be agents/workers of the Departed Asians Property Custodian Board conspired with others to receive money for purchase of expropriated properties from businessman Asuman Nkambwe, and Nambooze Jane.

 

Byakatonda was arrested shortly after his nomination and brought under tight security before Grade One Magistrate Jalia Basajjabalaba at Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court, where the charges were read to him.

 

The prosecution alleges that while serving as Chairperson of the Divestiture Committee of the Departed Asians Property Custodian Board, Byakatonda fraudulently obtained $220,000 from businessman Asuman Nkambwe, in July 2019.

 

He reportedly claimed the money was a commitment fee for purchasing prime properties on Plot 23 Martin Road and Plot 34 Rashid Road in Kampala.

 

He pleaded not guilty to both counts.
